Celebrating Strauss

Song of the week: Hymnus (R. Strauss) - T. Hampson, C. Thielemann

Euterpe - J. Handmann

Richard Strauss wrote about 200 Lieder, and only around 50 of them are part of the repertoire; the rest is hardly ever performed. We could say that’s pretty common, a composer’s complete corpus is rare in the repertoire, with the exception of composers such as Mahler and Duparc, who wrote just few songs. Those fifty Lieder are mostly performed with orchestral accompaniment instead of piano accompaniment; that's also normal, Strauss and Mahler fathered orchestral lieder. Some of these famous Lieder were not orchestrated by Strauss but by other composers during his lifetime. I understand that he was aware of that and consented. One last thing: among the Lieder that Strauss composed originally for voice and orchestra, only four are performed on regular basis.

Dog roses, forget-me-nots, daisies, buttercups and clover - Otto Ottesen

First post just published on the new website (remember last week we said goodbye to Blogger. If you come across something that doesn't work properly, please let me know asap!). To celebrate this new era, we are dedicating this post to Art Song. I can hear you saying: “Of course we are, as always!” Yes, but this time with a difference: today we are listening to the voices of composers, poets and experts through ten quotes.

Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov Flying CarpetThis blog has been hosted on the Blogger platform since that first post in February 2012. This week I'm posting here for the very last time; as the title says, we're moving. You'll see that, once we get over this fuss of moving, the new site is more friendly. With this post, I'm trying to make the moving easier for you; please keep reading up until the end, even though the text might be too much technical!

2014-2015 Season: song recitals in Barcelona

Song of the week: Abendempfindung (W.A. Mozart) - A. Scholl, T. Halperin

A corner of the loge - Mary Cassatt

I'm pleased with the song recitals programmed for next season in Barcelona. Despite some room for improvement, I like very much some of the singers who are coming and I really feel like listening to those others that I haven't yet heard live or singing art song. Beyond my personal likes, there is a better reference: most of these singers are scheduled in this present season or the next one at the Wigmore Hall in London (and, of course, at many other important venues in Europe).

Shall we review those recitals already programmed?

Song of the week: Liebesbotschaft (R. Schumann) - G. Finley, J. Drake

Spring clouds study - John ConstableI wasn't able to remember what followed before or after, just this fragment; at first I didn't even “hear” the piano, just the tune. Where did that music come from? And… why in that precise moment? After a while (you know how those earworms work…so persistent) I knew there was a piano and later I could “hear” a voice. Knowing there were piano and voice, no doubt it was a song. But whose voice was that? And what were the words? I could only tell that it was a baritone voice, surprise, surprise!
